While the Hidalgo County Courthouse in Edinburg is the physical home of the probate court, many RGV families now attend their hearings from the comfort of their home or office. While convenient, a virtual hearing is a formal judicial proceeding, and the court maintains strict standards for conduct and technology.
While the RGV has embraced the convenience of remote probate, the court in Edinburg maintains the same solemnity and strict rules as an in-person hearing. Whether you are appearing for a simple Will prove-up or a complex heirship determination, success depends on preparation.
Below is the 4-point framework we use to ensure your virtual appearance is professional, technically sound, and legally compliant with Hidalgo County standards
There usually are questions that can't be answered by a general online list. To better serve you, here are some quick links for more help.
YouTube Channel: Hidalgo County YouTube Channel (where public hearings are often streamed).
Court Coordinator: Regina Moreno at:

Registration: For certain dockets, you may be required to register in advance to receive the secure link.
The Link: Your attorney will typically provide the Zoom ID and password a day prior to the hearing. If you are self-represented, you must contact the Court Coordinator to schedule your setting and receive instructions.
Public Access: Many hearings are live-streamed on the court's YouTube channel. Those not participating in the hearing should view the stream there to avoid disrupting the digital courtroom.

Stable Connection: Use a computer with a reliable internet connection rather than a mobile phone when possible to ensure audio and video stability.
Camera & Lighting: Position your camera at eye level. Sit facing a light source (like a window) so your face is clearly visible to the Judge and Court Reporter.
Muting: Keep your microphone muted unless you are recognized to speak. This prevents background noise from McAllen traffic or household activities from interrupting the record.
No Recording: It is strictly prohibited for any party, witness, or third party to record the audio or video of a court proceeding

Attire: Wear professional clothing suitable for a job interview or religious service. Solid, soft colors are recommended as they perform better on video than busy patterns.
Environment: Choose a quiet, private location with a neutral background. Avoid participating in court while driving or in a noisy public space.

Disinterested Witnesses: If your hearing requires witness testimony (common in heirship cases), your witnesses must be ready to join the Zoom call individually. They may be placed in a "virtual waiting room" until it is their turn to testify.
Evidence Filing: All proposed exhibits, proofs, and oaths must generally be e-filed at least 24 hours before the hearing so the Judge can review them on their digital bench.
